,,I went on a diet ad swore off drinking and heavy eating. In fourteen days I lost two weeks.”
American comedian Joe E. Lewis
The header may sound a bit like an adventures book for boys, but the search for the highest blood alcohol concentration (BAC) ever measured turned out to be a true quest. The problem is that the Guiness Book of Records doesn’t keep track of whoever had the highest percentage of alcohol in his or her body. And without this authority it’s hard to tell which sources are reliable. The cases presented here at least come from recognized news media. So even though we know for a fact this list is just the tip of the iceberg, it’s still nice to have a look at how much alcohol the human body was able to handle in the past.
And what a day it was yesterday for the lovers of fairy tales in the Netherlands. As well as far beyond the borders. Yes, it was Queen’s Day in Holland, an annual event as the Dutchies celebrate the existence of the royal family. This year the party was bigger than ever since queen Beatrix made way for her son; king Willem-Alexander. Well so much for the fairy tale version: for most Dutch people 30 of April was once again a great excuse to join a massive bacchanalia. If you never been to Holland on ‘Koninginnedag’: it’s more or less St. Patrick’s Day, but instead of green, people wear orange.

Before Prohibition, a cocktail wasn’t a cocktail without bitters. But for many years, bitters were forgotten and Angostura was about the only brand you could find, and even that bottle would’ve been covered in dust. Now bitters are back, thanks in large part to the revival of classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan.
What Are Bitters?
Bitters are a relatively small player in the overall content of a cocktail, yet just a few drops of bitters make a liquor concoction far more interesting, adding complexity and balance while drawing out the other flavors in the drink.
Oh we’re on a role here… After taking the Alcohol Friendly Award twice, the Lords of the Drinks are now nominated for the Liebster Award. What? You don’t know what that is? Doesn’t matter, we never knew it existed either. It seems to be some kind of chain thing, since as far as we know nobody ever got an actual prize. Seems like a waste of time? Maybe, but since The Tipsy Nomads asked us some interesting questions when they nominated us, we don’t mind to play along.
